What Justifies Micro Maltipoo Puppies for Sale at $1,700 vs Maltipoo Teacup Dog at $1,500? Are Tiny Maltipoos Under 4 lbs Worth the Difference When Buying a 9-Week-Old Maltipoo?
Before deciding between buying a Micro Maltipoo Puppy at $1,700 versus a Maltipoo Teacup Dog at $1,500, understand exactly what makes tiny Maltipoos under 4 lbs worth the difference — or not worth it for your specific situation.
As a breeder who prices both categories, I’ll explain the honest math. Raising a verified micro 9-week-old Maltipoo to safe placement age costs approximately $180-220 more than standard teacup-sized puppies.
Why? Micro puppies under 4 lbs require: bi-daily hypoglycemia testing from weeks 5-9 (blood glucose monitoring equipment, time, expertise), additional veterinary developmental assessments ensuring skeletal and organ maturity despite tiny frame, documented breeding records proving both parents produced consistent micro-sized offspring (genetic predictability, not hopeful guessing), specialized micro-portion feeding schedules preventing digestive overload, and extended breeder observation before clearing for new home transition. Maltipoo teacup dog puppies at 4-5 lbs need quality care, but skip micro-intensive protocols.
Worth the difference? Answer honestly: Does your lifestyle absolutely require under-4-lb size for apartment restrictions, travel demands, or daily portability needs? If yes, $1,700 delivers verified micro genetics and health clearances worth every dollar. If a 4-5 lb teacup size fits your life perfectly, $1,500 provides an exceptional companion without a micro premium. Both are healthy, loved, fully guaranteed — size determines pricing, not quality.

Why New York Families Trust MFS for Their Maltipoo Puppies
Choosing the right breeder is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when bringing home a new puppy. New York families deserve a breeder who prioritizes ethics, health, and transparency—and that’s exactly what you’ll find at MFS.
Ethical Breeding Standards
Unlike many breeders who prioritize profit over welfare, we follow strict ethical breeding standards endorsed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. Our breeding dogs live as beloved family members, not kennel animals. They receive regular veterinary care, optimal nutrition, and plenty of socialization.
Advanced Health Testing
Every MFS Maltipoo puppy undergoes Embark DNA testing, the gold standard in canine genetic health screening. This comprehensive test screens for over 200 genetic conditions, ensuring your puppy is free from hereditary health issues common in small breeds. Additionally, all puppies are examined by our licensed veterinarian, vaccinated according to AAHA guidelines, and dewormed before joining your family.
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)
Developed by Dr. Carmen Battaglia and supported by research from the US Military’s Bio Sensor Program, ENS is a proven method of enhancing a puppy’s neurological development during their critical early weeks. Our puppies receive daily ENS exercises from days 3-16, resulting in:
Improved cardiovascular performance
Stronger immune systems
Enhanced problem-solving abilities
Greater resilience to stress
Better adaptation to new environments
For New York families, this means your Maltipoo will handle the bustling energy of Times Square, the subway rumble, or the quiet of Adirondack trails with confidence and calm.
Puppy Culture Methodology
We’re proud practitioners of Puppy Culture, a comprehensive socialization program recognized by veterinary behaviorists worldwide. This structured approach exposes puppies to:
Various textures, sounds, and surfaces
Different household environments
Positive human interaction
Age-appropriate enrichment activities
Safe exposure to novel experiences
Perfect for New York Living
Maltipoos are ideally suited for New York’s diverse living situations. Here’s why:
🏙️ Apartment-Friendly – Weighing just 5-15 pounds when fully grown, Maltipoos thrive in apartments and condos. They don’t require extensive outdoor space and are quiet, considerate neighbors—perfect for NYC living where close quarters are the norm.
❄️ Climate Adaptable – New York experiences four distinct seasons, from sweltering summers to snowy winters. Maltipoos handle this beautifully! Their Poodle coat provides insulation in winter (with a cute sweater for extra cold days), and they stay comfortable indoors during summer heat waves.
🚶 Moderate Exercise Needs – A daily walk through Central Park, Prospect Park, or your neighborhood is plenty for a Maltipoo. They’re not marathon runners, but they love exploring dog-friendly areas like the Madison Square Dog Run or Chelsea Waterside Park.
🧘 Calm & Adaptable – Whether you’re navigating crowded subway platforms, enjoying brunch on a pet-friendly patio in Williamsburg, or relaxing in your Albany home, Maltipoos adapt seamlessly to various environments and activity levels.

Everything You Need to Know About Maltipoo Puppies
The Maltipoo is a designer dog breed created by crossing a purebred Maltese with a purebred Toy or Miniature Poodle. First bred in the United States during the 1990s, Maltipoos quickly became one of the most sought-after hybrid breeds due to their adorable looks, hypoallergenic coats, and loving personalities.
Physical Characteristics
Size Options:
Teacup Maltipoos: 4-7 pounds, 8-10 inches tall
Toy Maltipoos: 7-12 pounds, 10-12 inches tall
Mini Maltipoos: 12-15 pounds, 12-14 inches tall

Cream & white
Apricot & caramel
Brown & chocolate
Silver & gray
Parti-color combinations
Grooming Needs: Maltipoos require regular grooming to prevent matting. We recommend:
Brushing 3-4 times per week
Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks
Regular nail trims and ear cleaning
New York has excellent grooming options! Check out Biscuits & Bath in Manhattan, Paws & Play in Brooklyn, or Posh Paws in Albany for professional grooming services.
Temperament & Personality
Maltipoos are renowned for their:
Affectionate Nature: They bond deeply with their families and thrive on companionship.
Intelligence: Poodle genetics make them highly trainable and eager to please.
Playfulness: They love interactive games, puzzle toys, and playtime.
Social Skills: Well-socialized Maltipoos get along beautifully with children, other pets, and strangers.
Adaptability: They transition easily between bustling city life and quiet suburban settings.
Health & Lifespan
With proper care, Maltipoos typically live 12-15 years. Common health considerations include:
Patellar Luxation (kneecap displacement) – Prevented through careful breeding
Dental Health – Small breeds need regular teeth cleaning
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – Screened via Embark DNA testing at MFS
All MFS Maltipoos are backed by comprehensive health guarantees and veterinary records.
Are Maltipoos Hypoallergenic?
While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, Maltipoos are considered one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers. Their Poodle heritage means they shed minimally and produce fewer allergens than many other breeds. This makes them perfect for New York families with allergies who don’t want to sacrifice the joy of dog ownership.

Why Maltipoos Are Perfect for New York City Apartments
Living in New York City presents unique challenges for dog owners—limited space, strict building policies, noise concerns, and navigating public transit. Fortunately, Maltipoos excel in urban environments and are consistently ranked among the best apartment dogs.
Small Size, Big Personality
Maltipoos’ compact size (5-15 pounds) makes them ideal for NYC apartments, whether you’re in a studio in the East Village or a one-bedroom in Murray Hill. They don’t need extensive floor space and are perfectly content curling up on your couch or in a cozy dog bed.
Quiet Neighbors
One of the biggest concerns for NYC apartment dwellers is excessive barking that could disturb neighbors. Maltipoos are naturally quiet dogs. While they may alert you to visitors, they’re not prone to incessant barking like some small breeds. Proper training further reinforces good behavior, ensuring your Maltipoo is a considerate apartment companion.
Minimal Exercise Requirements
Unlike high-energy breeds that need hours of outdoor activity, Maltipoos are satisfied with:
20-30 minutes of daily walking
Indoor play sessions
Interactive toys and puzzle games
Occasional trips to dog-friendly parks
New York City offers incredible dog-friendly spaces where your Maltipoo can socialize and exercise:
Central Park Off-Leash Hours (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM & 9:00 PM – close)
Madison Square Dog Run (24th Street, West Side)
Tompkins Square Dog Run (East Village)
Chelsea Waterside Dog Run (Hudson River Park)
Prospect Park Dog Beach (Brooklyn)
Carl Schurz Park Dog Run (Upper East Side)
Hypoallergenic Benefits
Many NYC buildings have strict pet policies, and allergies are a common concern. Maltipoos’ hypoallergenic coats make them more acceptable to landlords and roommates with sensitivities.
Public Transit Friendly
Maltipoos are small enough to travel in approved carriers on NYC subways and buses, making vet visits, trips to the groomer, or weekend adventures hassle-free. The MTA allows small pets in carriers, and Maltipoos adapt quickly to the sounds and movement of public transit.
Building Acceptance
Most NYC landlords and co-op boards that allow pets have weight restrictions (typically 20-30 pounds). Maltipoos comfortably fall within these limits, making them a practical choice for renters and co-op residents.
Testimonial: Sarah Thompson, Upper West Side, Manhattan
“I was hesitant to get a dog in my 500-square-foot studio, but my Maltipoo, Teddy, has been the perfect roommate. He’s quiet, clean, and loves our morning walks through Central Park. My neighbors adore him, and my landlord has never had an issue. MFS prepared him beautifully for city life!” – Sarah Thompson, Manhattan

Preparing Your Maltipoo for New York’s Four-Season Climate
New York experiences dramatic seasonal variation, from hot, humid summers to cold, snowy winters. Fortunately, Maltipoos adapt wonderfully to New York’s climate with proper care and preparation.
Summer Care (June – August)
Temperature Range: 70°F – 90°F Humidity: Often high, especially in NYC
Summer Tips:
Hydration: Always carry a collapsible water bowl on walks
Paw Protection: Hot pavement can burn sensitive paws. Walk during cooler morning/evening hours or use dog booties
Air Conditioning: Maltipoos are comfortable indoors with AC. Limit outdoor time during heat waves
Grooming: Consider a shorter summer cut for comfort (but not too short—they still need some coat protection)
Beach Safety: If visiting dog-friendly beaches, provide shade and fresh water
NYC Summer Alert: Sidewalks and asphalt reach extreme temperatures. The “five-second rule” helps: if you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Fall Care (September – November)
Temperature Range: 45°F – 70°F
Fall Tips:
Perfect Weather: Fall is ideal for longer walks and outdoor adventures
Leaf Pile Safety: While fun, check leaf piles for hidden hazards before your Maltipoo jumps in
Tick Prevention: Fall remains tick season in NY. Use veterinarian-recommended prevention
Allergy Awareness: Some Maltipoos may be sensitive to ragweed and mold. Wipe paws after walks
Winter Care (December – March)
Temperature Range: 20°F – 40°F Snow/Ice: Common, especially upstate
Winter Tips:
Sweaters & Coats: Maltipoos have minimal body fat and single coats. A dog sweater or jacket is essential for extended outdoor time below 40°F
Paw Care: Ice, snow, and salt can irritate paws. Use dog booties or apply paw balm before walks. Rinse paws after walks to remove salt and chemicals
Indoor Exercise: Provide indoor play and enrichment activities during extreme cold
Shorter Walks: Limit outdoor time to 15-20 minutes in sub-freezing temperatures
Dry Thoroughly: Always dry your Maltipoo after snow or rain exposure
Buffalo/Rochester Winters: Upstate New York sees significant snowfall. Invest in quality winter gear for your Maltipoo and clear designated potty areas in your yard.
Spring Care (April – May)
Temperature Range: 45°F – 70°F
Spring Tips:
Allergy Season: Pollen levels soar. Watch for excessive scratching, eye discharge, or paw licking
Spring Shedding: Even low-shedding Maltipoos may shed slightly in spring. Increase brushing frequency
Tick & Flea Prevention: Start preventive treatments early in spring
Year-Round New York Considerations
Air Quality: NYC and urban areas may have poor air quality days. Limit outdoor activity when AQI is high.
Veterinary Care: Establish a relationship with a trusted New York veterinarian immediately. We recommend:
Animal Medical Center (NYC)
Heart of Chelsea Veterinary Group (Manhattan & Brooklyn)
BluePearl Pet Hospital (Multiple NY locations)
VCA Animal Hospitals (Statewide locations)
Pet Insurance: New York veterinary costs can be high. Consider pet insurance providers like Healthy Paws, Trupanion, or Nationwide.
Testimonial: The Martinez Family, Buffalo, NY
“We were worried about bringing a small dog to Buffalo with our harsh winters, but our Maltipoo, Snowball (ironic name!), handles it like a champ. We bought him a cute winter coat from Chewy, and he loves playing in the snow for short bursts. MFS prepared us with great cold-weather care tips!” – Lisa Martinez, Buffalo

Proper training is essential for any dog, but it’s especially important in New York’s densely populated areas where your Maltipoo will encounter countless people, dogs, sounds, and situations. At MFS, we give your puppy a head start with ENS and Puppy Culture protocols, but continued training at home ensures long-term success.
Essential Training for NY Maltipoos
1. Socialization Expose your Maltipoo to:
Different people (ages, appearances, voices)
Other dogs (various sizes and breeds)
Urban sounds (sirens, traffic, construction)
Public transit (if relevant)
Various surfaces (grates, elevators, stairs)
Best NYC Socialization Spots:
Central Park – Weekend mornings for controlled dog meetings
Union Square – People-watching and urban sounds
Dog-Friendly Cafes – Practice calm behavior around distractions
2. Leash Training New York requires leashes in public spaces. Train your Maltipoo to:
Walk politely without pulling
Stop and sit at curbs before crossing streets
Ignore distractions (pigeons, squirrels, other dogs)
Respond to “heel” and “leave it” commands
3. Crate Training Crucial for apartment living and vet visits. A properly crate-trained Maltipoo:
Has a safe personal space
Is easier to manage during repairs or visitors
Travels safely
Prevents destructive behavior when alone
4. House Training Apartment living requires diligent house training:
Take your puppy out every 2-3 hours initially
Use pee pads as a backup (but transition to outdoor potty breaks)
Reward immediately after successful outdoor potty
Consider bell training for door signals
5. Elevator & Stair Safety For NYC apartments:
Teach your Maltipoo to enter/exit elevators calmly
Practice stair climbing (important for walk-ups)
Train “wait” at doorways

Common Behavioral Challenges & Solutions
Challenge: Excessive barking in apartments Solution: Teach “quiet” command, provide mental stimulation, address underlying anxiety
Challenge: Leash reactivity to other dogs Solution: Practice “look at me” command, maintain distance initially, gradual desensitization
Challenge: Fear of elevators/loud noises Solution: Positive associations (treats in elevator), gradual exposure, calming techniques
Professional Training Investment
Budget $100-$300 for group classes or $75-$150/hour for private sessions. This investment pays dividends in having a well-behaved, confident Maltipoo.

Tear Staining: Common in light-colored Maltipoos. Use tear stain wipes and filtered water.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Johnson Family – Brooklyn, NY
“We live in Park Slope and were looking for a small, hypoallergenic dog for our two young daughters. After months of research, we found MFS and couldn’t be happier! Our Maltipoo, Daisy, arrived at JFK Airport with her flight nanny, and the entire experience was seamless. Daisy came with complete health records, was well-socialized, and adjusted to our Brooklyn apartment immediately. She’s now 2 years old and remains the most loving, well-behaved dog we could have asked for. The ENS and Puppy Culture protocols really made a difference—she’s confident around loud noises, loves other dogs at Prospect Park, and has even mastered the subway! We regularly recommend MFS to friends looking for ethical breeders.”
— Michael & Emily Johnson, Brooklyn
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sarah Martinez – Manhattan, NY
“As a single professional living in a 600-square-foot Upper West Side studio, I was hesitant about dog ownership. But I’d always wanted a Maltipoo, and MFS made my dream come true. My Toy Maltipoo, Charlie, is the perfect apartment companion. He’s quiet, doesn’t shed, and requires minimal exercise—perfect for my busy lifestyle. The team at MFS was incredibly responsive, answering all my questions and providing ongoing support even after delivery. Charlie flew with a flight nanny to LaGuardia, and I met him at the airport. It was love at first sight! Two years later, he’s my best friend and has even been featured on my building’s ‘Pet of the Month’ board!”
— Sarah Martinez, Manhattan
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Chen Family – Rochester, NY
“We were searching for a reputable Maltipoo breeder for months and kept encountering puppy mills or breeders with questionable practices. When we found MFS, we knew we’d found the right place. The transparency, health testing, and ethical breeding practices were exactly what we wanted. Our Mini Maltipoo, Mochi, was delivered to Rochester Airport, and the entire process was professional and stress-free. Mochi came with Embark DNA testing, full veterinary records, and even a puppy starter kit! She’s now 18 months old and has brought so much joy to our family. We take her to Genesee Valley Park Dog Park regularly, and everyone comments on how well-behaved and beautiful she is. Thank you, MFS!”
— David & Jennifer Chen, Rochester
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Robert & Linda Thompson – Syracuse, NY
“As retirees, we wanted a small, low-maintenance companion to join us in our Syracuse home. Our Teacup Maltese, Bella, from MFS exceeded all expectations. At just 5 pounds, she’s the perfect lap dog. The Magee family went above and beyond to ensure Bella was ready for her new home, providing detailed care instructions and even calling to check in after delivery. Bella is healthy, happy, and has become a beloved member of our community. We take her to Thornden Park Dog Park, where she’s made plenty of puppy friends. We’re so grateful for the wonderful experience MFS provided.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Nguyen Family – Buffalo, NY
“Buffalo winters can be brutal, and we were worried about bringing a small dog to our cold climate. But MFS reassured us that Maltipoos adapt beautifully with proper care. Our Toy Maltipoo, Luna, loves playing in the snow (with her adorable winter coat) and is the perfect addition to our family. The ENS training helped her develop a strong immune system and resilience to stress—she handles cold weather like a champ! We picked her up from Buffalo Airport, and the flight nanny service was exceptional. Luna came healthy, happy, and ready to play. We couldn’t recommend MFS more highly!”

“I’m a nurse with an unpredictable schedule, and I needed a dog that could adapt to my lifestyle. My Maltipoo, Oliver, from MFS has been absolutely perfect. He’s calm, affectionate, and doesn’t mind if I’m gone for a long shift (I have a dog walker come midday). Oliver is well-socialized thanks to Puppy Culture protocols, and he’s never shown signs of separation anxiety. I love taking him to Swinburne Park Dog Park on my days off. The support from MFS has been incredible—they genuinely care about their puppies and the families who adopt them.”

How much do Maltipoo puppies cost in New York?
Maltipoo puppies from MFS range from $1,300 to $1,700 depending on size, generation, and other factors. Teacup Maltipoos are typically priced higher due to their rarity and demand. Our pricing includes Embark DNA testing, complete veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping, and lifetime breeder support—offering exceptional value compared to other breeders.
Do Maltipoos shed? Are they truly hypoallergenic?
Maltipoos are considered low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them ideal for allergy sufferers. While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, Maltipoos produce significantly fewer allergens than most breeds due to their Poodle heritage. Many families with allergies successfully own Maltipoos without issues.
Are Maltipoos good for NYC apartments?
Absolutely! Maltipoos are among the best apartment dogs due to their small size (5-15 lbs), quiet nature, and moderate exercise needs. They thrive in Manhattan studios, Brooklyn brownstones, and everywhere in between. Proper training and daily walks are all they need to be happy apartment companions.
How do I get a Maltipoo puppy delivered to New York?

Your puppy travels in-cabin with a trained caregiver and you meet them at the airport. We also offer ground transportation for nearby areas. Delivery typically costs $350-$550 depending on location.
What is the temperament of a Maltipoo?
Maltipoos are known for being affectionate, intelligent, playful, and adaptable. They bond closely with their families, love children and other pets, and adjust easily to various lifestyles—from active families to quieter senior households. Their Poodle genetics make them highly trainable and eager to please.
How big do Maltipoos get?
Maltipoos come in three sizes:
Teacup: 4-7 lbs, 8-10 inches tall
Toy: 7-12 lbs, 10-12 inches tall
Mini: 12-15 lbs, 12-14 inches tall
Size depends on the Poodle parent (Toy vs. Miniature) and generational factors (F1, F1b, F2).
Are Maltipoos healthy? What health problems do they have?
Maltipoos are generally very healthy with a lifespan of 12-15 years. At MFS, all puppies undergo Embark DNA testing to screen for 200+ genetic conditions, including Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and hip dysplasia. Common health considerations include dental disease (preventable with regular care) and patellar luxation (screened through selective breeding).

Proper nutrition is essential for your Maltipoo’s health, energy, and longevity. Here’s what New York owners need to know about feeding their Maltipoo.
Recommended Dog Food Brands
We recommend high-quality, small-breed formulas with:
Real meat as the first ingredient
No artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors
Balanced Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids
Appropriate calorie density for small breeds
Top Dog Food Brands for Maltipoos:
Royal Canin Small Breed – Veterinarian-recommended
Hill’s Science Diet Small Paws – Optimal nutrition
Blue Buffalo Life Protection Small Breed – Natural ingredients
Wellness CORE Small Breed – Grain-free, high-protein
Maltipoos typically live 12-15 years with proper care. Some have been known to live even longer! Their longevity is one reason they make such wonderful family companions—you’ll have many years of love and memories together.
What colors do Maltipoos come in?
Maltipoos come in a variety of beautiful colors including:
White & cream
Apricot & caramel
Brown & chocolate
Black
Silver & gray
Parti-color (two or more colors)
At MFS, we often have multiple colors available. Check our available puppies page to see current colors!
Are Maltipoos recognized by the AKC?
No, Maltipoos are a designer hybrid breed and are not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, they are recognized by hybrid registries such as:
American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC)
Designer Breed Registry (DBR)
International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR)
What’s the difference between F1, F1b, and F2 Maltipoos?
F1 Maltipoo: First generation cross (50% Maltese, 50% Poodle)
Most hybrid vigor
Coat may vary from wavy to curly
Typically hypoallergenic
F1b Maltipoo: Backcross to Poodle (25% Maltese, 75% Poodle)
More Poodle traits
Curlier coat, most hypoallergenic
Popular with severe allergy sufferers
F2 Maltipoo: Second generation (Maltipoo x Maltipoo)
More predictable traits
Can vary slightly in size/coat
At MFS, we primarily breed F1 and F1b Maltipoos to ensure the best hypoallergenic qualities.
Can Maltipoos be left alone during the day?
Maltipoos can be left alone for 4-6 hours with proper preparation, but they’re companion dogs and prefer not to be alone for extended periods. Tips for NYC workers:
Hire a dog walker for midday visits
Use doggy daycare (many options in NYC!)
Provide puzzle toys and enrichment
Crate train for safety
NYC Dog Walking Services:
Wag! – On-demand dog walking app
Rover – Connect with local pet sitters
Biscuits & Bath – Daycare and boarding
Do Maltipoos like water and swimming?
Maltipoos have varying water preferences—some love it, others tolerate it. Introduce water gradually using:
Shallow kiddie pools
Dog-friendly beaches (Prospect Park Dog Beach in summer!)
Gentle encouragement with toys
Always supervise around water, as small dogs can tire quickly while swimming.
Are Maltipoos easy to train?
Yes! Maltipoos are highly intelligent thanks to their Poodle heritage and eager-to-please personality from their Maltese side. They excel in:
Obedience training
Potty training
Trick training
Agility (some Maltipoos love it!)
The ENS and Puppy Culture protocols at MFS give your puppy a head start in training readiness.
Can I take my Maltipoo on NYC public transportation?
Yes! According to MTA rules, small dogs in carriers are allowed on NYC subways and buses. Tips:
Use an airline-approved soft-sided carrier
Acclimate your Maltipoo to the carrier gradually
Travel during off-peak hours when possible
Bring treats for positive associations
LIRR & Metro-North: Also allow pets in carriers during off-peak hours. Check specific schedules for details.

Puppy-Proofing Your NY Home: Complete Preparation Guide
Before your Maltipoo arrives, you’ll want to prepare your home to ensure safety, comfort, and a smooth transition. Here’s a comprehensive checklist for New York families.
Essential Supplies Checklist
Feeding: ☐ Food and water bowls (stainless steel or ceramic) ☐ High-quality small-breed puppy food ☐ Treat container ☐ Elevated feeding station (optional but helpful)
Sleeping & Crating: ☐ Appropriately-sized crate (24″ for most Maltipoos) ☐ Comfortable crate pad or bed ☐ Crate cover (creates den-like environment) ☐ Additional dog bed for living areas
Potty Training: ☐ Puppy pads (for initial training or backup) ☐ Enzymatic cleaner for accidents ☐ Outdoor leash for potty breaks ☐ Poop bags and dispenser
Safety & Containment: ☐ Baby gates (for room restrictions) ☐ Playpen (optional but useful in apartments) ☐ Collar with ID tag ☐ Harness (better for small breeds than neck collars) ☐ 6-foot leash
Keep small objects (coins, rubber bands, buttons) off floors
Lock cabinets containing food or hazards
NYC Apartment-Specific Concerns:
Balconies: Secure gaps where a small puppy could slip through or fall
Windows: Use window guards or ensure windows can’t open wide enough for escape
Elevators: Keep your puppy leashed or carried until they’re trained
Hallways: Be mindful of slamming doors that could injure your puppy
Protect Your Belongings:
Move expensive shoes, books, and valuables to higher shelves
Use bitter apple spray on furniture legs to deter chewing
Remove or secure loose cords (phone chargers, lamps)
Protect baseboards in rental apartments (can save your security deposit!)
Designate Key Areas
Sleeping Area: Choose a quiet location for your puppy’s crate—ideally your bedroom initially to reduce separation anxiety. Many NYC apartments have limited space, so a corner of the bedroom works perfectly.
Feeding Station: Establish a consistent feeding area away from high-traffic zones. Use a placemat to catch spills (important for maintaining apartment cleanliness).
Backup Option: Keep puppy pads near the door for emergencies or late-night needs
Apartment Buildings: Know your building’s pet policy (some require service elevators for dogs)
Play Zone: Create a safe play area with toys and enrichment. Use a playpen in open-concept NYC apartments to contain your puppy while you’re busy.
NYC-Specific Preparations
Building Notifications:
Notify your landlord or co-op board of your new pet
Provide vaccination records if required
Review building pet policies (elevator usage, common area restrictions)
Neighbor Considerations:
Introduce yourself and your new puppy to neighbors
Reassure them about training efforts to minimize barking
Be considerate of noise during early training period
Emergency Plan:
Locate nearest 24/7 emergency vet (Animal Medical Center, BluePearl)
Program emergency numbers into your phone
Identify a trusted friend/neighbor who can help in emergencies
Post ASPCA Poison Control number: (888) 426-4435
Transportation:
Purchase airline-approved carrier for subway/bus travel
Keep carrier accessible for vet visits
Practice carrier training before your puppy arrives
Schedule Preparation
Plan time off work for your puppy’s first week home. This bonding period is critical for:
Establishing routines
Beginning potty training
Building trust and attachment
Monitoring adjustment
Arrange pet care for situations where you’ll be away (work, travel):
Research dog walkers and daycare options
Interview and hire a trusted pet sitter
Establish backup plans
First Day Checklist
Upon Arrival: ☐ Give your puppy time to explore (supervised) ☐ Offer water immediately ☐ Wait 1-2 hours before offering food ☐ Take outside for potty break frequently ☐ Keep first day calm and low-key ☐ Establish feeding and potty schedule ☐ Begin crate training gently ☐ Limit visitors initially (prevent overwhelming)
First Night:
Expect some whining/crying (this is normal!)
Keep crate near your bed for comfort
Take out for potty break once overnight
Remain patient and calm
First Week Goals: ☐ Establish consistent routine ☐ Begin house training ☐ Schedule first vet visit within 3-5 days ☐ Start name recognition training ☐ Introduce basic commands (sit, come) ☐ Continue socialization (gradual exposures)

Proper socialization is one of the most important things you can do for your Maltipoo puppy. At MFS, we begin socialization through our Puppy Culture protocols, but continued exposure in your New York environment ensures a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.
Why Socialization Matters
Benefits of Proper Socialization:
Reduces fear and anxiety in new situations
Prevents aggression toward people or other dogs
Builds confidence for navigating NYC’s busy environment
Improves trainability and responsiveness
Creates a well-rounded companion ready for any adventure
Critical Socialization Period: 8-16 weeks of age During this window, puppies are most receptive to new experiences. However, socialization should continue throughout your Maltipoo’s life.
Safe Socialization Timeline
8-10 Weeks (First Days Home):
Focus on bonding and building trust
Introduce household sounds and environments
Meet immediate family and close friends
Supervised interactions with vaccinated, friendly dogs
Washington Square Park – Musicians and diverse stimuli
Brooklyn Bridge Park – Scenic waterfront walking
High Line – Unique elevated park experience
Dog-Friendly Events:
Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade (October)
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (Madison Square Garden, February)
Strut Your Mutt (Multiple cities, fundraising walk)
Socialization Checklist
Expose your Maltipoo to a variety of:
People: ☐ Different ages (babies, children, teens, adults, seniors) ☐ Various appearances (hats, sunglasses, uniforms, wheelchairs) ☐ Different voices and behaviors ☐ Diverse ethnicities and cultures (important in NYC!)
Animals: ☐ Friendly, vaccinated dogs (various sizes and breeds) ☐ Cats (if you have friends with cats) ☐ Small animals (seen from distance—squirrels, birds)
Environments: ☐ Urban settings (sidewalks, crosswalks, crowds) ☐ Parks and green spaces ☐ Indoor public spaces ☐ Veterinary clinic (happy visits, not just exams!) ☐ Grooming salon ☐ Friend’s homes
Sounds: ☐ Traffic noise ☐ Sirens ☐ Subway/train sounds ☐ Construction ☐ Thunder/fireworks (use recordings if needed) ☐ Household appliances (vacuum, blender) ☐ Doorbells and knocking
Surfaces: ☐ Pavement ☐ Grass ☐ Gravel ☐ Metal grates (common in NYC) ☐ Stairs and elevators ☐ Different flooring types
Handling: ☐ Paws and nails ☐ Ears ☐ Mouth and teeth ☐ Body and tail ☐ Gentle restraint (for vet visits) ☐ Grooming tools
Socialization Tips for Success
1. Go Slow: Don’t overwhelm your puppy. One or two new experiences per day is plenty.
2. Use Positive Reinforcement: Bring high-value treats (small pieces of chicken, cheese, or training treats) and reward calm, confident behavior.
3. Watch Body Language: Learn to read your puppy’s signals:
Confident: Tail up, ears forward, relaxed posture
Fearful: Tail tucked, ears back, cowering or freezing
Overstimulated: Jumping, excessive barking, inability to focus
4. Avoid Forced Interactions: If your puppy is fearful, don’t force them to approach. Allow them to observe from a distance and approach at their own pace.
5. End on a Positive Note: Always conclude socialization sessions with a success, even if small.
Common Socialization Challenges
Challenge: Fear of loud NYC traffic Solution: Start with quieter streets, gradually increase exposure, use high-value treats for positive associations
Challenge: Reactivity to other dogs Solution: Practice “look at me” command, maintain distance initially, reward calm behavior
Challenge: Fear of subway/bus travel Solution: Practice carrier training at home, take short trips initially, reward calm behavior with treats
Challenge: Overwhelming crowds Solution: Visit busy areas during off-peak times first, keep sessions short, provide reassurance
Upstate New York Socialization
If you live outside NYC, socialization priorities may differ slightly:
Rural/Suburban Areas: Focus on car rides, various terrains (hiking trails, beaches), encounters with wildlife (from safe distances)
Small-Town Settings: Farmers markets, local shops, community events
Seasonal Considerations: Exposure to snow, rain, seasonal sounds (lawnmowers, snowblowers)
Maintaining Socialization
Socialization doesn’t stop after puppyhood! Continue providing diverse experiences throughout your Maltipoo’s life to maintain confidence and adaptability.
Monthly Goals:
Visit at least one new place
Meet new people and dogs
Practice in different environments
Reinforce positive experiences
Yearly Goals:
Review and refresh basic training
Introduce new activities (agility, tricks)
Maintain regular dog park or playdate schedule

Ready to Start Your Journey?
If you’re ready to welcome a Maltipoo into your New York home, we’re here to help every step of the way.
Yes! Maltipoos are among the best breeds for allergy sufferers. Their Poodle genetics result in low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats that produce minimal dander. While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, Maltipoos are as close as you can get. Many of our New York customers specifically chose Maltipoos due to family allergies and report excellent results.
How do Maltipoos do in extreme weather?
Hot Weather (NYC Summers): Maltipoos handle heat moderately well but need protection:
Avoid midday walks on hot pavement
Provide plenty of water and shade
Keep indoor spaces air-conditioned
Watch for signs of overheating (excessive panting, lethargy)
Cold Weather (NY Winters): Small dogs like Maltipoos have minimal body fat and need protection in cold temperatures:
Use dog sweaters/coats below 40°F
Protect paws with booties or balm
Limit outdoor time in freezing temperatures
Dry thoroughly after snow exposure
With proper preparation, Maltipoos thrive in all four New York seasons!
Can Maltipoos do agility or dog sports?
Absolutely! While they’re small, Maltipoos are athletic and intelligent. Many excel in:
Agility courses
Rally obedience
Trick training
Nose work
Therapy dog work
NYC Agility Training:
Zoom Room (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Albany)
Canine Country Club (Brooklyn)
Do Maltipoos shed seasonally?
Maltipoos are non-shedding to minimal shedding. Unlike double-coated breeds that “blow their coat” twice a year, Maltipoos have a single coat that sheds very little year-round. You might notice slightly more loose hair during spring and fall, but nothing compared to traditional shedding breeds.
Are Maltipoos yappy or barky?
No! One of the best qualities of Maltipoos is their relatively quiet nature. Unlike some small breeds (like Chihuahuas or Yorkies) that bark excessively, Maltipoos are typically calm and only bark to alert you to visitors or unusual sounds. This makes them excellent for apartment living where excessive noise would disturb neighbors. Proper training further ensures quiet behavior.
Can my Maltipoo eat human food?
Some human foods are safe in moderation:
Plain chicken, turkey, beef (cooked, no bones)
Carrots, green beans, sweet potato
Blueberries, apples (no seeds), bananas
Plain rice and oatmeal
Peanut butter (xylitol-free only!)
Plain yogurt (small amounts)
Toxic Foods to Never Give:
Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic
Xylitol (artificial sweetener)
Avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol
Best Practice: Stick primarily to high-quality dog food and use human food only as occasional treats (no more than 10% of diet).
How often should I bathe my Maltipoo?
Every 3-4 weeks is ideal for Maltipoos. Bathing too frequently can strip natural oils and dry out skin, while bathing too infrequently allows dirt and oils to build up.
NYC Considerations:
Urban environments may require more frequent bathing due to pollution and sidewalk grime
Use gentle, dog-specific shampoos
Always brush thoroughly before bathing to prevent matting
Do Maltipoos have a favorite person in the family?
Maltipoos can develop a slight preference for one person, but they typically love all family members. To prevent over-bonding with one person:
Have different family members handle feeding, walking, and playtime
Encourage varied interactions
Avoid having one person do all the caregiving
Can I travel with my Maltipoo on planes?
Yes! Maltipoos are excellent travel companions due to their small size. They can fly in-cabin in an airline-approved carrier (typically under 20 lbs, including carrier). Tips for air travel:
Book pet-friendly airlines (most major carriers allow small pets)
Pet fee: $95-$125 each way
Acclimate your Maltipoo to the carrier beforehand
Fly non-stop when possible
Check airline-specific requirements
NYC Airports:
JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark all accommodate pet travel
Arrive early to allow time for pet check-in
Some airlines require health certificates for travel
What if I need to rehome my Maltipoo?
Life circumstances change, and we understand. At MFS, we have a lifetime return policy. If you can no longer care for your Maltipoo, contact us and we’ll work with you to find a solution. We never want our puppies in shelters or bad situations.
How can I tell if a breeder is reputable vs. a puppy mill?
Red Flags of Puppy Mills:
Won’t let you visit their facility
Sell puppies under 8 weeks old
Have multiple breeds available constantly
No health testing or guarantees
Pressure you to buy immediately
Poor communication or transparency
Signs of a Reputable Breeder (Like MFS):
✅ Transparent about breeding practices
✅ Performs genetic health testing
✅ Uses ENS and Puppy Culture protocols
✅ Provides comprehensive health guarantees
✅ Offers lifetime support
✅ Asks questions about your lifestyle and home
✅ Has positive reviews and testimonials
✅ Limits breeding frequency (health over profit)
Do you ship to all areas of New York?
